Brazil skipper Marquinhos spoke with the host broadcaster: “We’ve achieved our first objective, but we have to keep going.

“It was a difficult group. Now the real competition begins.

“It’s like the Champions League – there’s no point finishing top of your group if you’re not ready afterwards.

“The small details are going to make all the difference.”

Scotland midfielder John McGinn spoke with the host broadcaster after the match: “Gutted obviously. Gave up goals at poor times to a team that can punish you with quality.

“We just have to wait now [to see how the other results play out], but you can see the lads are gutted.

“We fell short on quality, but we gave absolutely everything [tonight]. The lads are empty. We will now have to wait and see.

“We have given ourselves a more difficult chance [at qualification]. It is looking unlikely now.

“At moments, they just hunt you. If you make mistakes, you get punished.

With Morocco beating Haiti 4-2, despite going down a goal twice, they take second place with seven points, courtesy of a goal difference of three.

Brazil top Group C with seven points as well, but have a healthier goal difference of six.

Scotland sit in third with three points, and will now hope for some favourable results to fall their way.

Haiti will be heading home, finishing with zero points after three matches.

With two goals and plenty of shots, the Real Madrid star is judged Player of the Match.

Brazilian fans will have to wait a bit longer to see one of their own score a World Cup hat-trick.

But Vinicius Junior will be content to have four goals already this tournament, with a certain Lionel Messi leading the top-scorers’ race with five.
