Marquinhos: ‘Now the real competition begins’

Brazil skipper Marquinhos spoke with the host broadcaster: “We’ve achieved our first objective, but we have to keep going.

“It was a difficult group. Now the real competition begins.

“It’s like the Champions League – there’s no point finishing top of your group if you’re not ready afterwards.

“The small details are going to make all the difference.”

McGinn: ‘If you make mistakes, you get punished’

Scotland midfielder John McGinn spoke with the host broadcaster after the match: “Gutted obviously. Gave up goals at poor times to a team that can punish you with quality.

“We just have to wait now [to see how the other results play out], but you can see the lads are gutted.

“We fell short on quality, but we gave absolutely everything [tonight]. The lads are empty. We will now have to wait and see.

“We have given ourselves a more difficult chance [at qualification]. It is looking unlikely now.

“At moments, they just hunt you. If you make mistakes, you get punished.

“We got fortunate that a goal got disallowed. We know we have to be better. It is a bit raw at the minute. Hopefully, the journey is not over.”

Vinicius dazzles as Brazil top Group C

Brazilian fans will have to wait a bit longer to see one of their own score a World Cup hat-trick.

But Vinicius Junior will be content to have four goals already this tournament, with a certain Lionel Messi leading the top-scorers’ race with five.

Scotland were never in it, despite having their moments. They will now have to see how the rest of the groups finish for their chances at qualification into the next round.

    McTominay almost scores!

Scotland win a free kick. The ball is driven in from the right side, but Brazil are able to repel the threat.

Scotland then win a corner, which results in McTominay’s shot at point-blank range, which Alisson is able to just keep out.

That is arguably the closest chance they have had all match.
