- Asian champions Qatar draw 1-1 with Switzerland as the teams open their account at the 23rd edition of the FIFA World Cup.
- The match was played at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in San Francisco, United States, where Boualem Khoukhi scored in injury time to earn Qatar their first World Cup point.
- Qatar are the reigning AFC Asian Cup holders and have qualified for a World Cup for the first time, having played in the 2022 edition as tournament hosts.
- The teams are joined in Group B by Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina, who drew their opening match on Friday.
- Argentina are the defending champions, having lifted the trophy at Qatar 2022, and begin their tournament against Algeria on Wednesday.

Ian Wright weighs in on Qatar
“I’m delighted for Qatar,” the former England and Arsenal striker told ITV Sport in the United Kingdom.
Wright also weighed in on the controversial Swiss goal: “We don’t know if Switzerland’s goal was offside or not.
“This could have been the greatest result in their [Qatar’s] history. They could have won that 1-0.”
