England 0-0 Ghana: World Cup 2026 – at it happened

We’re nearly at the halfway stage of World Cup 2026 and the excitement is already in full flow.

It may have finished 0-0 between England and Ghana, but Tuesday was the day this World Cup became the edition with the most goals scored in the group stages – in fewer games than the previous record in 2014.

Forty-six games of the 104 in the tournament are in the books, and with six games to come on Wednesday, we’ll be at the midway point in 24 hours.

Thank you for your company on a night when the Three Lions were left frustrated, but you have to admire the discipline and commitment of the Black Stars, with both sides looking set for a run into the knockout stages.

Ghana striker Jordan Ayew, speaking after the game: “We stayed humble and defended well. I think our game plan worked.

“We defended really, really well. We are playing against one of the teams in the title race. We are doing our best to make our country and ourselves proud.”

England head coach Thomas Tuchel spoke on US TV after the game: “Things are on a very fine line in football.

“How did that ball not go in at the last moment? If it was going to fall to anyone, it should have been Harry [Kane]. But you saw, it didn’t happen.

“Ghana defended with a 4-5-1 formation. If you can’t break the deadlock with a goal, it turns into a game of patience.

“Our substitutes were good again and made a big impact. It needs to continue like this.”

Croatia will face Panama in the other Group L match in Toronto in about 30 minutes time, with the Group K clash between Colombia and DR Congo to follow at 02:00 GMT from Guadalajara.

Marc Guehi’s 126 successful passes are the most on record by an England player in a World Cup match.

He was also fouled seven times; no defender in World Cup history has earned more free-kicks in a game.

England have now drawn 23 games at the World Cup, with 13 of them being 0-0; both are the highest numbers of any side in the history of the competition.

England had 78.8 percent possession against Ghana. It’s their highest-ever figure in a World Cup match. It is also the most by any side that failed to score in a match in the tournament since records began.

A frustrating evening for England ends with a point.

Ghana are celebrating a job very well done. A defensive masterclass.

England left it late before upping the intensity and might feel they could have nicked a winner if they’d played another five or six minutes, but it would barely have been deserved as the discipline and commitment of the Black Stars defence warranted a clean sheet.

In a grandstand finish, Saka saw a rasping drive saved by Asare, O’Reilly’s header came back off the underside of the bar, Kane lashed the follow-up over the bar, and Guehi’s looping header was headed away from underneath the bar.

Tricky game, and a reality check for Thomas Tuchel and Three Lions fans, but England stay top of Group L and will stay there should they beat Panama in the group finale.

England win another corner but have to wait for Ghana to send on another big defender in place of Adu, the earlier sub, but again the Ghana defence holds strong.

Rice whips it in before it’s hooked back into the middle by O’Reilly, before Guehi’s looping header is headed off the line and away for another corner.
