Norway continue incredible run against Selecao

Norway remains the only team that Brazil have ever faced and failed to beat.

Tonight was the fifth meeting between the two nations, with Norway running out winners on three occasions and drawing the other two.

Two of those wins were at the World Cup finals, winning 2-1 in 1998 in the group stage and again tonight.

    Thirteen not unlucky for Haaland

Erling Haaland has now scored in each of his last 14 competitive international matches for Norway, netting 26 goals across this run.

He last failed to score in a competitive match for his nation in October 2024, against Austria in the UEFA Nations League.

    What now for Brazil?

This is not a vintage Brazil team – it’s fair to say.

Carlo Ancelotti is one of the world’s best managers, but he can only do so much.

Neymar is in tears after the full-time whistle. He has scored his ninth World Cup goal, but that’s surely the end of his chapter, one that promised much but delivered little on the global stage.

This is the earliest Brazil have been eliminated from a World Cup since 1990, when they were knocked out by Argentina in the round of 16. They had reached at least the quarterfinal in each of their last eight World Cups prior to this edition.

Gabriel and Marquinhos may have enjoyed stellar seasons with their clubs, but they did not do enough to prevent Haaland’s two goals, the first a powerful downward header after he was allowed a running jump, and the second a fierce shot into the bottom corner after being given a couple of yards of space outside the box.

Vinicius Junior showed flashes of his talent across their five games, but his most telling contribution today was a delightful through-ball for 19-year-old Endrick, who made a hash of his one-on-one with the keeper and ended up prodding wide of the post after a heavy touch when the game was poised at 0-0.

It might all have been so different had Guimaraes converted the first-half penalty which he saw saved by Nyland, stuttering and sending in a tame shot at a good height for the keeper.

Plenty of work for Ancelotti to do in the next four years.

    Next up for Norway?

It’s a trip to Miami, where the heat and humidity might be even higher, for a Saturday night showdown with Mexico or England at 21:00 GMT.

The last-16 game in Mexico City is due to kick off in just under two hours, although severe weather means it may well be delayed.

    Full time: Brazil 1-2 Norway

It’s all over, and Norway make history!

Erling Haaland’s late double has taken Norway into the quarterfinals of the World Cup for the first time, while five-time winners Brazil bow out.

Nyland in the Norway goal saved a first-half penalty from Guimaraes and produced an astonishing save to claw the ball off his line from teammate Ajer late on, but despite Neymar’s penalty in the dying seconds, Brazil could not mount a grandstand finish, and they exit in the last 16.

    Norway edge closer

It’s the Norway fans making all the noise as they win a corner, but they are content to play it backwards just to maintain possession.

    Nyland makes stunning save

Nyland to the rescue with a truly astonishing recovery save as the ball loops over his head off Ajer and is destined for the back of the net, only for the keeper to fly through the air and get a fingertip onto the post.

Brazil keep coming, but Casemiro flashes a cross across the face of goal when it needed a calmer pass.
